Great Yorkshire Airshow

The 26th September saw the first Airshow to be held in Yorkshire for many years. Held at Leeds East Airport, it was the former RAF base, Church Fenton. As an avid aviation enthusiast I went with mixed views on what it would be like, as you will see it more than lived up to not only mine, but many others expectations. Church Fenton has a track record which starts in the 1930?s. A pre and post war base, it was the home to 72 and 213 Squdrons, the flew Gladiators and Gaunlets, just prior to the war these were replaced by Spitfire Mk 1s. As the war raged the air base saw much action, it was attacked many times by the Luftwaffe, one evening saw the base attacked by JU88?s they left trail of destruction damaging a Blenheim on the runway. There is plenty of reference material on second world war airbases in the county It was the first airbase to house jet fighters, the Gloster Meteor. The airbase was a scene of many air shows, it?s last in 1994. We now see the return of this show, Yorkshire is now back on the map with an aviation extravaganza.
